MAY-DECEMBER (WED, 7 FEB)
Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under the pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past.
Loosely based on the infamous case of Mary Kay Letourneau, May December introduces us to Gracie Atherton-Yu (Julianne Moore), a pet store worker who gained media notoriety after having an affair with Joe Yu (Charles Melton), 23 years her junior.
Now, 20 years on, the couple are still married and are bracing themselves for their twins to graduate from high school. When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) comes to spend time with the family to better understand Gracie, who she will be playing in a film, family dynamics unravel under the pressure of the outside gaze.
Joe, never having processed what happened in his youth, starts to confront the reality of life as an empty-nester at thirty-six. And as Elizabeth and Gracie study each other, the similarities and differences between the two women begin to ebb and flow. Set in picturesque and comfortable Camden, Maine, May December is an exploration of truth, storytelling, and the difficulties (or impossibility) of fully understanding another person.
Swaddling its difficult fact-based story in a blanket of campy humour, May December is a seductively discomfiting watch from acclaimed director Todd Haynes. (Carol, Far From Heaven)
