It’s very sad news for TRON fans today as Disney has pulled the pin on the third installment. Director Joseph Kosinki was already hard at work on the third and got word yesterday that Disney will not be greenlighting the film in which Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were already set to return too.
There’s no official word on why Disney decided to pull the plug but rumours floating around is that it has to do with the disappointing release of TOMORROWLAND which only pulled in $33million opening weekend on a budget of $190million. It’s also said that with Disney now in full tilt with Marvel and Star Wars projects finding a suitable date to release Tron 3 was proving difficult, also when you look at Disney’s upcoming slate with Jungle Book another Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Petes Dragon, Live Action Beauty and the Beast and the rather strange Live Action Dumbo directed by Tim Burton all on the cards in the coming few years, just maybe Disney has too much on their plate? Who knows but for this Tron fan its a little disappointing.
Also in news about Tron 3 Kosinki was also hoping to get Jared Leto to come onboard in a major roll but talks didn’t even start. Supposedly Disney hasn’t cancelled it completely but instead we might see it a few more years down the track. Let’s hope so.
