Unchartered Update

As previously reported here at AccessReel a film adaptation of the playstation 3 exclusive video game franchise ‘Unchartered’ has been in development with David O Russell onboard as the director. Unchartered has been on my top list of most wanted video game film adaptations for some time now due to the game’s cinematic storytelling, fun characters and brilliant set pieces.

Casting announcements so far have included Mark Wahlberg in the lead role of Nathan Drake, with a supporting cast that includes Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. Director David O Russell’s most recent film ‘The Fighter’ also starred Mark Wahlberg and received much critical praise.

It is now being reported that David O Russell has departed working on the film, without any specific indication of what has caused him to leave, it is only rumoured to be creative differences on the project. It now seems that the hunt will be on for a new director to take over, whether this means there will be any recasting or if the previously announced cast will remain intact is yet to be seen.

There is an unfortunately outcome for the project which has been on the cards for several years now however it hasn’t managed to build up much momentum in development until recently. Stay tuned as we wait for further announcements on a possible director, or if this means development of the film will be on hold for some time.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
