Whedon to direct Batgirl?

The DC Cinematic Universe might be about to receive a big injection of new creative talent with Joss Whedon reportedly in talks to write, product, and direct a Batgirl film.It appears the Avengers director and Buffy creator is “close” to sealing a deal to take on the project, which would include further characters from the Batman mythology.

There have been a few different versions of Batgirl over the years as with many comic characters, current indications are that this adaptation would focus on the traditional persona for Batgirl, being Barbara Gordon, daughter to Jim Gordon.

There’s also varied speculation in terms of what story the film might follow, some rumours include adapting some of the New 52 Batgirl story arc written by Gail Simone, while other reports are suggesting the film will go all the way back to stories written in the late 1960’s for inspiration.

If the project does indeed progress it’ll be the second DCCU film to headline a female character, following the anticipated Wonder Woman film due out in the coming months.

This is an exciting development for the DCCU, it demonstrates a willingness to shake things up in a creative sense for DC’s slate of superhero films, and it’s hard to argue Whedon wouldn’t be up to the task of bringing Batgirl to the big screen.

Leith spent most of his formative years growing up on the coastal fringes of Western Australia without a cinema in sight. There he grew up on the wonders of home rentals before relocating to Perth and gaining access to a proper cinematic experience just in time for the Star Wars Special Edition re-releases. From there Leith's love of movies expanded to volunteering on a Star Wars fan film, reviewing films, writing about film news, and attending film and pop-culture related conventions on the other side of the world. Leith's favourite films are too many to mention but all start with the Star Wars saga, Back to the Future, the Dark Knight trilogy, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings and all things Kevin Smith. With an insatiable appetite for all things pop-culture related Leith also has an unhealthy addiction to the world of comics and can often be found buried under a pile of unread back issues madly trying to catch up on a number of titles coming out from mostly DC and Darkhorse.
