The LA Times has reported that Robert Rodriguez is in talks with Fox Studios for directing the as yet untitled X-Men spinoff film focusing on Deadpool. Rodriguez has recently been working on ‘Spy Kids 4: Armageddon’ and the action picture ‘Machete’ which stars Danny Trejo.
Deadpool was played by Ryan Reynolds in last year’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’, which despite performing poorly with critics went on to gross $374 million worldwide. Reynolds screen time as Deadpool was short, though he managed to provide a glimpse of what we might expect from a film that is more centred around the character.
‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ was plagued with problems including poor visual effects, bad dialogue, plot inconsistencies none of which prevented it from performing well at the box office. For the franchise to recover some critical acclaim that was achieved with the first two instalments the quality of these things really needs to improve.
It’s looking positive for ‘X-Men: First Class’, with Mathew Vaughn directing the project and for someone like Robert Rodriguez to tackle the comedy, violence mix of Deadpool (which sounds like a good fit) it feels like the franchise is going to make some positive steps.
