Red Dog Proves its Mans Best Friend

Red Dog Proves its Mans Best Friend

Well Red Dog has been in cinemas for a couple of weeks now and its been pulling some incredible numbers! Suffice to say it will be the best aussie film this year eventhough it has gone up against some quality films such as Griff the Invisible and Snowtown. Red Dog continues to bring the punters in with a strong word of mouth helping the film reach its opening weekend figure of $1.8million.

Starring Josh Lucas, Rachael Taylor and an ensemble cast including Luke Ford, Arthur Angel, John Batchelor, Rohan Nichol, Noah Taylor, Loene Carmen and Keisha Castle-Hughes, Red Dog is the story of a charismatic kelpie who roamed the West Australian outback in the 1970s, hitching rides, adopting people and uniting communities along the way. Adapted by Daniel Taplitz from the best-selling novel by award-winning author Louis De Bernières (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin), the film was shot in South Australia and the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Roadshow Films Managing Director Joel Pearlman said: “This is an outstanding start for Red Dog at the Australian box office. It is always exciting when a local production finds a substantial audience and Red Dog has absolutely connected with audiences in cinemas this past weekend.”

Producer Nelson Woss added: “It’s a fantastic response to the film – the critics have embraced it, and now we are delighted that audiences around Australia are discovering and enjoying Red Dog at the cinema!”

In a new Press release through yesterday the Manging Director of Roadshow films Joel Pearlman had to say

“It is unbelievable that yesterday’s box office was actually 12% UP from the opening day, last Thursday  … that rarely happens.   I recall that The Castle went up in its second week, but I can’t think of many others that have done it. It just goes to show that Red Dog is a movie that Aussie audiences really love.”

“We’ve been inundated by people saying how good the movie is – everyone is blown away by it, and they must be telling their friends because more and more people are going along to the cinema to see it. In fact cinemas have added extra sessions for the weekend to accommodate everyone.”

With accessreel getting quite a few emails asking if the film is going to get a US release I have a feeling this will be the case with Josh Lucas and Rachael Taylor as the leads and being known in America they shouldn’t have a problem selling this film and to be honest an incredibly smart move by producer Woss. Some Australian films barely get a release in the states to do not having a ‘known lead’, so I expect some big things from this Aussie film.
