Gru, the girls, the hilarious minions and a love interest get tangled along the adventures in Despicable Me 2. Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal.

Animation and CGI has taken over the film world and allowed us to create wonderful and magical imagery (when it’s in the right hands of course). DESPICABLE ME was released in 2010 when animation had its best cinematic year. Half of the top ten films at the box office were animated films which accumulated $3.5 billion at the box office. Holy smokes! Now, in 2013 the kiddies have got it good, with fantastic and unbelievable animated films, along with being released in 2D and 3D, they are able to have a magical cinematic experience.

DESPICABLE ME 2 offers fantastic visual imagery with bright and fun colours. I watched the film with an eight year old in 3D and he was constantly putting his hand up thinking he could touch the objects on screen. If you watch the film in 3D, it surprisingly compliments it nicely, and you will hardly notice you’re wearing the glasses. The films visual aspect dominates all over the first film and it’s much more comedic in my opinion.

The hilarious minions are definitely what retains the comedy. Without them, the films would just be about a struggling Father trying to bring down the ‘bad guy’. The minions will have you giggling in your seat and are randomly laugh-out-loud funny. They are slapstick comedy, except in sit-coms you’d have three or four, here, there’s about five hundred of them. They certainly steal the scene and capture your attention. Gru (Steve Carell) is just hilarious and also caring, the opening scene really proves how much he loves his kids – we get to see him dressed as a fairy!

The films narrative is paced well, with witty humour and short, sharp and clever editing. The jokes are easily understood by the entire audience and will leave a smile on your face for the rest of the day. It’s almost rare to find a film with sequels where the second film is at the same level or even more interesting than the first, however, DESPICABLE ME 2 won me over. Definitely worth taking the kids to see it these school holidays.

Suitable for all ages, I rate DESPICABLE ME 2, 7 out of 10 stars. It is released in cinemas June 20.
